Turingia’s school include ensuring sufficient time for meals, providing appealing and diverse food options, and implementing policies that encourage healthy choices before, during, and after school.


Improving garden food with students works best when it combines learning, teamwork, and real results. 

1. Involve students in planning

  • Let students choose what to grow (vegetables, herbs, fruits).
  • Teach them about seasons and local foods.
  • Create small student teams responsible for different garden beds.

HEALTHY NUTRITION

Healthy school meal program provide a nutritional balance including vegetables, fruits, whole grains, different kind of proteins, with a portion of healthy fats.


 2. Improve Soil an Plant Care

  • Teach composting using school food scraps.
  • Show students how to water properly and avoid wasting water.
  • Practice natural pest control (hand-picking insects, companion planting).
     

BALANCE NUTRITION

 3. Use Hands/on Learning

  • Connect gardening to science (plant growth), math (measuring), and health.  
  • Keep a garden journal to track plant growth and problems.  
  • Let older students mentor younger ones.  

4. Focus on Food Quality

  • Harvest at the right time to improve taste and nutrition.  
  • Wash and store produce correctly.  
  • Teach basic food safety and hygiene.

  • Use garden food in school meals when possible.
